SOUTH AFRICA (19 Jan 2017)

Sail along the Western Cape of South Africa and take in the picturesque sights of its beaches and coastal wine regions, set to a backdrop of the majestic Table Mountains. The South African wine industry, birthed in the 1600's, has been growing in leaps and bounds since the end of the Apartheid era and has over the last decade received more and more international attention for its quality wines.

Two particular grapes which put the country on the world map would be Chenin Blanc and Pinotage. Tonight's Wine Voyage takes an interesting turn as we witness a showdown between the two, and participants get to vote which wine they think would make the best ambassador for the country!

Chenin Blanc, originally a Loire Valley varietal, is believed to be among the first vine cuttings that arrived in South Africa in the 1600's, and is locally known as Steen. It is the single most planted variety in South Africa, accounting for 20% of all grape production.

Moving over to the reds, no grape screams 'South Africa' as much as Pinotage. And that is no wonder, considering that it was invented at Stellenbosch University in 1925 by a professor named Abraham Izak Perold, as a cross between Pinot Noir and Hermitage (the local name for Cinsaut).
